We will soon be approaching Spring break.  I believe most students enjoy the two week break in the spring.  We find that the second trimester is the longest with all of the holiday breaks.  It went from November to March!  Then it will be on to the final push for the end of the year.

The one thing I have always liked about our charter schools is that I never feel we rush to finish.  After the high school completes its 180 day traditional calendar, they experience a wonderful opportunity called FAST TRACK in which students are allowed to make up a course or advance to get ahead.  Some are given the chance to take college courses.

The rest of our schools, Primary and Discovery continue on for an additional 5 weeks of instruction.  We believe this gives us a chance to help student truly master the concepts and skills we have presented over the course of the year.  It gives us time to really finish out the year.  We do not feel rushed or frustrated that we do not have enough time.

TK students are healthy eaters!  This week students learned about food groups.  They had fun sorting and classifying foods into the groups they learned.  They also enjoyed looking through magazines to create their own balanced and healthy plate of food to eat!  We caught them during free play using math manipulatives to create a restaurant full of healthy food choices.  We love watching them learn through play and seeing them extend our lessons into a fun activity that they devise themselves!

Reminder:  Spring pictures will be Friday, April 7th.  Students must still wear recess and PE appropriate shoes.

Primary Charter

 Initial Phase

This week in P6 we practiced mechanics in our sentence writing.  This means that all of our sentences have a capital letter at the beginning, proper punctuation, spaces, and properly formed letters.  When you’re doing homework with your students this week, encourage them to use these mechanics in their writing.
We hope to see you all at parent teacher conferences.  If you did not turn in your sign up form, please do so ASAP.

Phase 1

Phase 1 students did a great job collecting Pennies for Patients! Thank you!  We sure do have kind and giving students.  We welcomed spring with open arms and are looking forward to nicer, warmer weather.  We continued our Poetry Unit in Writer’s Workshop as the students wrote Triplet Poems and showed off their rhyming talents.  We are looking forward to their completed Poetry Book.  In Science we learned all about stars, black holes and the constellations.  We even got to create a constellation of our own.  Did you know that stars have a life cycle?? Learning about the Solar System is “Out of This World!”  Our AR goals will be due soon.  Keep encouraging your student to read, read, read!  In Math our students have successfully demonstrated their skills in measurement.  They will be working on some very cool projects in the next couple of weeks.  Great Job Phase 1!  Don’t forget that Parent-Teacher Conferences are coming up the week of April 3rd.

Phase Two

In Science, students continued to work on our weather and energy units.  Ask your student about all of the great projects and activities we have been working on!  Please remember that Science Fair Projects are due on Monday, April 3rd.  We can’t wait to see them!  Phase two AR goals were due today, Friday, March 24th.  Our new AR goal period will begin on Monday, March 27th, and end on Friday, May 19th. Please make sure your student is reading at least 20 minutes every night!  Phase two students did a great job collecting money for Pennies for Patients!  We appreciate your continued support!  Please note that Parent-Teacher Conferences are the week of April 3rd. Parent-Teacher Conference schedules were sent home this week.  Please notify your student’s teachers as soon as possible if you will not be able to make it on your scheduled time.  Have a great weekend!

Our MHS Career Ed Class has just finished another year of Mock Interviews, and the kids did not disappoint!

Our counseling department always does an excellent job with inviting prospective internship providers and providing an excellent lunch where the students can practice their dining and table room etiquette.  We received many compliments from our community guests on our students’ manners and professionalism which made us very proud of these young adults. Some of the interviewers have participated in this event for many years, and they were truly impressed

.

Overall, the experience was great for the students and guests and they all really seemed to enjoy it. Once again we would like to congratulate our students for a job well done and thank our guests for taking the time from their busy schedules to make this experience a huge success.

Students are preparing for several competitions at the Discovery Level for Math, Science, and the academic competition for five subjects devoted to World War II.  Discovery usually does well in these competitions in which we compete with schools from all over the County.  I am very interested in these competitions for several reasons.

I believe they help calibrate how our school is doing compared to others in the district.  I also think the competition topics or theme help to enrich the curriculum.  I know that we have added things to our curriculum or ad different novels because of this competition interest. Our students enjoy competition and learn how to work in groups to compete using cooperation.  Math students learn how to think though problems and use a variety of strategies to find answers.  I like that they learn there is more than one way to figure it out.  The Academic Competition brought a respect and learning about World War II and things related to it in art, music, and literature.  Students learned about battles, scientific inventions, as well as the effects of the Holocaust, and internment camps in America.  The students  involved in science learn how to invent and build things to compete. It inspires creativity and group planning and follow through.

I am very grateful to the county for providing these competitions for our middle school students.  I know it has enriched our curriculum, taught us how to integrate, and bring new learning to all levels of students and even to us as teachers.

The preschool room is under construction! Our students have begun and in depth investigation of cities and towns. We’ve taken a virtual tour of San Francisco and are now in the process of creating our own City. Group projects in preschool take on many forms beginning with brainstorming. We can’t wait to see where our students ideas take them as they practice problem solving, communication, documentation and group work.

T K

Our TK students had a great time gearing up for spring to begin next week. They reviewed the season and how weather, plants, and animals change in the springtime. Students made kites and got to fly them outside on a windy day. They also enjoyed having a picnic outside with their classmates. On Friday the TK class explored St. Patrick’s Day during a variety of centers, including crafts, poetry, and science experiments! They were surprised in the afternoon by a sneaky leprechaun that made a mess in our classroom! We almost caught him and he left us a hat full of gold! What an exciting week!

Primary Charter

This week in Initial Phase students explored molecules in liquids!  In observance of St. Patrick’s Day, we made Rainbow in a Jar and WOW did the kiddos love it.  Ask your student why the liquids sank and/or didn’t sink.  You’ll be amazed at what they learned.

Phase 1 Students did a terrific job with the Read Across America Read-A-Thon! Thank you for helping to raise money to support our school!  Great Job!  We had fun celebrating St. Patrick’s Day!  The shenanigans of those leprechauns made us laugh, but we also had many learning opportunities!  We counted, read and did science experiments.  Learning can always be fun!  In Writer’s Workshop we wrote Haikus and Acrostic Poems.  These types of poems don’t rhyme, but they help us learn to use our senses when we write.  In Science we learned all about asteroids, meteorites, and comets. Next week we can’t wait to learn about stars!  . Keep reading every night to reach your AR Goal and practice those math facts.  Parent-Teacher Conference times will be sent home next week.  Please look for them in your student’s folder. Happy Spring!

Our phase 2 students are excited about all the science we’ve been learning this trimester.  Our classes even got a special visit from Mr. Snell and MHS student scientists!  They enjoyed the hands-on science demonstrations and we are very lucky that we have high school students on campus to show off their knowledge!  This month our 4th grade leadership students are cleaning up our campus.  They are setting a good example of how to be a polite citizen.

PCS conferences will be the week of April 3-7.  Conference confirmations will be sent home soon.

It’s been a busy week in Language Arts! This week we are diving into SWO speeches. This is the final part of SWO for Trimester 2, and students are really showing off what they have been working so hard on since January. Also, students have finished making their verb tense games, and we look forward to trying them out to practice our conjugations. Finally, we finished our previous novel and are moving on to our next, which deals with WW2 on the homefront: Farewell to Manzanar. In this book, students will see what life was like in a Japanese Internment camp through the eyes of a girl who experienced it. We are very excited to start this journey!

This week is SWO Speech Week! Students are able to showcase all they have learned about their WWII topics. Their knowledge of all facets of WWII has grown considerably since the start of the year; it’s wonderful to see!

WAX MUSEUM

The 7th and 8th graders did a great job performing for the WAX Museum project.  The students were well prepared and learned many things about the character they were portraying.  Many students have done this project several times and it is easy to see how much they have improved over time.

FIFTH GRADE

The new to be enrolled 5th graders came this week to meet with Mrs. Hawkins.  They explained how excited they are to come to the school.  Many have been waiting since Kindergarten to enroll and I am sure it was a long wait, but they think it was worth it.

LOTTERY

Thanks to Mrs. Beringer, the Kindergarten lottery was conducted last week.  We are so sorry we are only able to take a few students but the TK students are now part of Primary so they take priority as per our charter.

PRESCHOOL

Preschool is expanding to include a half day program AM OR PM in addition to the full day program.  Call for more detail if you are interested.

MOVING and BUILDING

The relocation of our high school campus for next school year is in the planning stages.  We will be over behind West High School in a campus that was built for high school that will accommodate our students quite well while our Primary and Discovery two story building is built.  The high school remolding will take place once Primary and Discovery is able to move into their new two story building.  The entire process, once it gets started should take about two years.  We will keep you well informed as we learn what is happening.

This week in TK students explored force and motion. Our scientists learned the scientific words gravity, force, position, push, pull, motion, and friction. They learned how gravity works, they observed animals moving fast and slow, brainstormed things they can push or pull, and discovered how some objects can roll, slide, and spin. At the end of the week, students worked in small group centers to experiment with force and motion. They had fun making predictions about how fast or slow objects would move and if friction or gravity would alter their speed. It was exciting to see the students creating their own experiments!

Initial Phase

This week students have been busy mapping out their own story.  Students are encouraged to think of things they know a lot about when picking a writing topic.  We then discuss story elements such as characters, setting, problem, and solution.  The stories we have heard so far are wonderful.  Encourage your student to write stories at home!  They are an amazing keepsake and not to mention wonderful practice!

We also visited the Wax Museum put on by Mrs. Wallaces’ students.  P-6 students learned about famous people of the past and got to watch 7/8 grade student reenact the famous, historical men and women.  We were impressed at the level of respect that the 7/8 grade students demonstrated for our little learners.

Phase 1 Students had an amazing time on their field trip to the Chabot Space and Science Center!  They learned so much more about the solar system, telescopes, astronauts, and space.  Did you know that telescopes have names?  Ask your student if they remember the name of one of the telescopes. Thank you so much for all the volunteers that accompanied us.   In Science we will continue our unit on the Solar System and learn all about asteroids, meteors, and comets.  In Writer’s Workshop, the students began their unit on poetry.  The firs type of poem we are learning about is the Haiku.  Students are learning to use their senses when writing about nature.  We have some very talented and creative writers.  Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead this weekend.  We are definitely looking forward to spring and spring weather!  Please look for Parent/Teacher Conference Sign-Ups to come home soon.  For those that are going to the Mother-Son Masquerade Dance….Have FUN!!!

At Discovery, we know building a caring school community is a complement to academic achievement.  We believe in creating classrooms where there is cooperative learning.  Students work in whole group, pairs, or small groups to deepen their understanding of concepts and to understand how to work with one another.  Through rigorous instruction, students are motivated to learn, build a liking for school, enjoy classes, and learn to have a concern for our TLC family.  Our goal is to have excellent communications with our students, and our TLC family.  Please contact your child’s teacher with any questions.  We encourage your contacting of staff to ensure your child’s growth.
